Econo Bums

Part of my life now consists of cloth diapers. Yuk! I really do not enjoy cloth diapering. I don't like swishing the nastiness into the toilet. I don't enjoy the extra bulk it puts on my babies bottoms causing their clothing to look odd.

So why do I cloth diaper if I loathe it so much. I don't do it because it is better for the economy. I am not a passionate "green/save the planet" type person. I also don't do it because it is easier on my babies skin. I don't worry that the chemicals in the disposables will give my baby cancer. These days everything can give you cancer it seems. I don't do it because it is the "in" thing to do. I simply do it to save money! That is it! That is why I am cloth diapering.

The day we found out I was pregnant with baby number two, the thought of cloth diapers did not cross my mind. However, the day we found out I was pregnant with babies number two AND three!!, the thought crossed my mind. I was trying to think through how we would pay for all those diapers. That was fixing to be a lot of diapers, especially since Jason was not yet potty trained! So we tossed and turned over the idea and decided that it would be best for us to cloth diaper the twins.

I have not actually sat down and calculated out exactly how much we have saved or will save. I can guarantee though that even considering the detergent, the water used to rinse and wash them as well as the original cost of the cloth diapers, we are not spending as much as we would have on disposables.

I have done a great deal of research on cloth diapering. I have several friends that cloth diaper that have taught me a lot about the new ways of cloth diapering. I appreciated learning and being shown the newer things, because it really is overwhelming at first glance. In the end we chose to go the old fashioned route. We use the good old Gerber prefolds, PINS (yes! pins), and Gerber rubber pants. It was the most affordable. They work just great! We were also given a box of cloth diapers with a bunch of handy dandy new fangled cloth diapers. Econo bum brand of all things for this not green mama! They Velcro instead of pin. I do like the ease of Velcro vs. pins. New technique or old technique, all the poop still needs swished and rinsed down the toilet, and let's face it, that is pretty nasty. I know you can buy the hose to hook to your toilet to avoid any contact with said nastiness, I also know you can buy little insert/liner things that you can throw away when there is a poopy diaper. But since we are aiming to save money, this is not an option for us. If your aim is to be green rather than save $$, I say, buy that hose!!

We are cloth diapering during the day, and at night the babies go into a disposable. We were having to much leakage at night that we decided it wasn't worth it. We also put them in disposables for church (even though our church nursery is very supportive of cloth diapering) just for the sake of convenience. If we will be out and about for a long time, or on a trip, they will be in disposables. But hey, at home, they are econo-bumming it up! We haven't bought a single disposable yet. We are still using what has been gifted to us. Pretty amazing since they are about to be four months old! God is good!

There are so many opinions on cloth diapers. So many options. So many for it, so many on the fence, and so many against it. I personally think it saves money. I do not think it is fun. I do not think it is for everyone! I am glad that we have the option to cloth diaper. For us, cloth diapering is a wise use of our money.
